Lime in forestry, pond farming and agriculture
Spreading fertiliser lime on agricultural land counteracts acidification and has a positive effect on the nutrient status of the soil. Depending on the soil conditions, different grinding finenesses are recommended. Human and animal organisms need the element calcium as an essential component of the skeleton, for example. An unbalanced diet low in calcium can lead to bone softening and brittleness. In agriculture, ground, carbonated (i.e. unburnt) lime is used as feed lime. As with fertiliser lime, the legislator imposes special quality requirements on the composition. The lime coating commonly used in stables in agriculture protects against diseases, as lime disinfects and hygienises.
The viruses, salmonella and coli bacteria in the slurry are also destroyed by the addition of lime. This means that liquid manure can be safely applied to the fields. Lime is also used in pond management for a variety of hygienisation measures. Apart from neutralising the water, its most important function is to destroy parasites that are harmful to fish stock and thus improve the health of the fish. The occurrence of the Endress Gräfenberg quarry dates back to the Mesozoic era in the Jurassic period 130 - 190 million years ago.
